Quick answer

Mass conversion runs through the kilogram. One kilogram is 2.205 pounds, one pound is exactly 0.45359237 kilograms, one stone is 6.35 kilograms or 14 pounds, and one metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms. Watch the tons: a US short ton is 907.18 kg while a UK long ton is 1,016.05 kg.

About the Weight and Mass Converter

Weight and mass converters move values between kilograms, grams, pounds, ounces, tonnes, stones and carats. While physics distinguishes mass from weight, in everyday use the terms are interchangeable, and these units are used for cooking, shipping, fitness, trade and science.

Enter a value in any unit and this tool displays the equivalent across all units, making it easy to follow recipes, read labels or compare shipping weights.

Three different tons, all in common use

"Ton" is the most ambiguous unit in everyday use, because three distinct quantities share the name and all three appear in shipping, freight and industrial contexts without always being labelled.

A US short ton is 907.185 kg, or 2,000 pounds. A metric tonne is exactly 1,000 kg. A UK long ton is 1,016.047 kg, or 2,240 pounds. The long ton is 12.0% heavier than the short ton, and the short ton is 9.3% lighter than a metric tonne.

  • Freight quotes, emissions figures and commodity prices are frequently stated in tons without specifying which, and the choice moves the number by up to 12%.
  • The metric tonne is often spelled "tonne" in British usage to distinguish it, but American writing usually spells all three "ton".
  • This converter lists all three separately. When a source does not say which it means, the country of origin is usually the best guide.

Mass and weight are not the same property

Everything on this page converts mass: the quantity of matter in an object, which does not change with location. Weight is the force gravity exerts on that mass, and it does change: the same object weighs about a sixth as much on the Moon while its mass is identical.

In everyday use the distinction rarely matters, because kitchen and bathroom scales are calibrated for Earth's gravity and report mass directly. In engineering and physics it matters a great deal, and the units are genuinely different: kilograms and pounds-mass measure mass, while newtons and pounds-force measure weight.

  • The pound used here is the pound-mass, defined as exactly 0.45359237 kg.
  • Pounds-force belong with newtons on the force converter, not here, because they measure a different physical quantity.
  • A stone is exactly 14 pounds, and is still commonly used for body weight in the UK and Ireland.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many pounds are in a kilogram?

⌄

One kilogram equals about 2.20462 pounds, and one pound equals roughly 0.453592 kilograms.

How many grams are in an ounce?

⌄

One ounce equals approximately 28.3495 grams.

Is a US ton the same as a metric tonne?

⌄

No. A metric tonne is 1,000 kilograms, a US (short) ton is about 907 kilograms, and a UK (long) ton is about 1,016 kilograms.
