How to convert oz to g
Specialty coffee measures shots and doses in grams even in the US, because gram-level precision (a difference of 1-2 g in a 18 g dose noticeably changes extraction) matters more than the ounce ever could. This is a case where a nominally imperial-unit country has adopted the metric measurement specifically for accuracy, not tradition.
The avoirdupois ounce used here (1/16 of a pound) is distinct from the troy ounce used for precious metals, which is about 31.1 g, roughly 10% heavier. A "one ounce" gold coin and a "one ounce" bag of sugar are not measuring the same-sized ounce. US postage is still priced by weight in ounces, with a single first-class stamp covering up to 1 oz (28.35 g), one context where the ounce remains the operative unit even for an otherwise metric-leaning shipment.
