Area Converter
Convert between square metres, square feet, acres, hectares and square miles for land, flooring and mapping.

Quick answer
Area conversion runs through the square metre. One hectare is 10,000 square metres, one acre is 4,046.86 square metres or about 0.405 hectares, and one square foot is 0.0929 square metres. Because area scales with the square of length, doubling a linear dimension quadruples the area.

About the Area Converter
Area measures the size of a two-dimensional surface. This converter handles square metres, square kilometres, square feet and square inches, plus land-measurement units such as the acre and hectare.
It is widely used in property, agriculture, construction and mapping, where the same plot may be quoted in different units depending on the country.
Area factors are not length factors
The most common mistake in area conversion is reusing the linear factor. A metre is 3.28084 feet, so it is tempting to treat a square metre as 3.28084 square feet. It is not. The factor has to be squared, making a square metre 10.7639 square feet.
On a 10 by 10 metre room that is the difference between 1,076 square feet and 328. The same applies in reverse and to every other pair: doubling a room's linear dimensions quadruples its area, which is why floor area rises so much faster than perimeter.
- Volume follows the same rule cubed: a cubic metre is 35.3147 cubic feet, not 3.28084.
- Prices quoted per square unit change by the squared factor too, which is why per-square-foot and per-square-metre rates look so different.
- This converter applies the correct squared factors, so converting directly avoids the error entirely.
Acres, hectares and the local units
Land is the one area application where traditional units survive almost everywhere. An acre is 4,046.856 square metres (historically the area a team of oxen could plough in a day) and a hectare is a round 10,000 square metres. One hectare is about 2.4711 acres, and one acre about 0.40469 hectares.
Beyond those, land is still traded in regional units that have no international definition and often vary between districts of the same country. Bigha, katha and cent are widely used across South Asia; tsubo in Japan; dunam across parts of the Middle East.
- Where a local unit varies by region, confirm the local definition before converting, as the same name can mean substantially different areas.
- Property listings frequently mix units, quoting plot size in local units and built area in square feet.
- A square mile is 640 acres, which is why US land survey sections are that size.
