How to convert ft² to m²
US and UK property listings state floor area in square feet, while most of continental Europe, and most of the rest of the world, use square metres. And the conversion is not the simple length factor squared in people's heads: because area scales with the SQUARE of length, a small error in the length conversion becomes roughly double that percentage error in area, which is why "just multiply by 3.3" (the linear metre-to-foot factor) badly overstates a converted area.
The correct relationship comes from squaring the linear factor: since 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.092903 square metres, not 0.3048 again. Skipping this squaring step is one of the most common unit-conversion mistakes people make when estimating area by hand.
